CRS Intern Position in the Diocese of Phoenix

The Diocese of Phoenix Catholic Relief Services’ Office is seeking an Intern to develop relationships with parishes that will promote and sustain a culture of solidarity within the parish. The Intern will visit parishes to introduce and deepen understanding and engagement in CRS programs, especially CRS Rice Bowl. No prior experience with CRS Rice Bowl is necessary. The Intern will also assist in the development and implementation of a program to supplement CRS Rice Bowl.
This is a great opportunity to work in the Diocese of Phoenix diocesan offices under the strong leadership of Bishop Thomas Olmsted. The candidate selected as the CRS Intern will have the opportunity to network with priests and parish staff, which could lead to future full-time employment with a local parish or diocesan organization.

Music-based Evangelization with Saint Cecilia Classical Productions Inc.

Saint Cecilia Classical Productions Inc. is conducting a nationwide talent search for traditional Catholic young ladies of exceptional music ability in the areas of classical voice (alto or soprano), string or wind instruments (piano, violin, harp, guitar, etc.)  They are interested in graduating seniors or recent graduates. Individuals who were home-schooled for their pre-college education or were raised in the Tridentine Mass tradition are also encouraged to apply. Students who have not yet graduated may participate in our program through the summer months. While not a requirement, acting, dance, Music Theater, choir, public speaking or pro-life counseling experience would be an additional plus. Some knowledge of Latin would also be helpful.
Their basic requirements are: a strong music background in one’s chosen field; a sound knowledge of basic Catholic teachings; faithfulness to the Holy Father and the Magisterium of the Church; a strong devotion to Our Lady and the Rosary; and a good understanding and appreciation of the Church’s teaching on modesty.

Selected individuals will work as members of an all women’s vocal ensemble, consisting of four or five young ladies. Each person will perform both solo and group roles. Multi-talented individuals who can both sing and play an instrument may interchange their roles between performer and accompanist. The group will be involved in both live performances, as well as such studio recording work as the production of pro-life, pro-family music videos and regular CD album production.
Their main base of operations will be the Akron-Canton area of northeast Ohio, with some limited travel within the state being required. While, technically, this is an all-volunteer ministry, some compensation will be provided each performer on a per concert or event basis. All of our concerts are done on a “free will offering” basis, with all net proceeds going to the performers. Additionally, all expenses for travel, lodging & meals will be paid. This is a great opportunity to learn more about one’s own faith, while evangelizing our Catholic population, and bringing them the pro-life message. At the same time, you will also be working with other young Catholic musicians who share the same traditional values.

Central America

The Catholic Mission in Benque Viejo del Carmen, Belize, Central America will be opening its John Paul II Jr. College in August 2013.  The first year the Jr. College will offer associate degrees in Liberal Arts, English, Business, and Primary Education.
The Mission has staffed its high school, now open for over 20 years, with generous volunteers from the U.S., Canada and other countries. Volunteers have made the opening and the running of the high school possible.  Once staffed with 100% volunteers, the high school is now run with about 3/4 paid Belizean staff and about 1/4 volunteers staff and serving close to 500 students per year. Over 300 hundred volunteers have served at the high school over the past 20 years. Most will tell you they were some of the best years of their lives.
They are now looking for a few adventurous volunteers who would like to dedicate a year or two of their lives in the exciting project of opening a new college. They will begin small with between 25 and 50 students the first year, that is, 1 or 2 classes. All students will be required to take their liberal arts core.  Few specialization classes will be offered the first year.

Mexico

Exciting Teaching Opportunity

Northridge School is a Catholic all-boys bicultural school located in Mexico City, and is partner schools with Northridge Prep in Chicago and the Heights in Potomac, Maryland.  They currently have classes of grades 1st - 6th, and next year they will begin their middle school with the addition of a 7th grade. There are plans to add one grade a year through high school. The chaplaincy of the school is entrusted to a priest of Opus Dei and the school is guided by its mission. 60 percent of the school’s classes are given in English (English, Math, History and Science), and the other 40 percent are given in Spanish.  Spanish is not a requirement for an english teaching position, although it is helpful. The school's class size is restricted to no more than 25 boys per class. This is an awesome opportunity to grow as a teacher! There is a close- working team who exchanges ideas and offers support on a consistent basis. On the last Friday of the month there is a teacher development day, on which the boys have the day off. The teachers come in and have several talks/ workshops to help them grow professionally and as a community, and they always round it off with a good sports game.

Northridge is interested in offering an education of the whole person. The school runs a mentoring program for their students from 2nd grade and up where they meet with an assigned mentor--usually a teacher--5 times a year to talk about how things are going both socially and academically and how they can grow as person and student.

For those concerned about working/living in Mexico, we have included a letter written by a friend of Tony Janeiro's, Brad McBride, who moved from Texas to Mexico and has been a resident there since the 1970's. He  works now as a professor at the ITAM--the leading financial university in Latin America.

I am writing you from Mexico City at the request of my friend Tony Janeiro, whom you know.  My name is Brad McBride, I am a professor of Business and Finance at a university in Mexico City, ITAM (Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México).  Tony mentioned that you are considering teaching at Northridge School here but have some reservations about the issue of crime and insecurity in this city and country.  Tony asked me to give you a frank appraisal of how I see it being an American and resident in Mexico for the past 24 years. I believe that currently, Mexico City is (ironically) safer, much safer, than the northern regions of the country.  What many Americans do not understand is that the narcoviolence plaguing Mexico is generally concentrated in the northern states, such as Chihuahua (especially Ciudad Juárez), Nuevo León (around Monterrey), Tamaulipas (south of Brownsville, Texas), and secondly, in the Pacific coast state of Sinaloa, and maybe somewhat in Michoacán.  But truthfully, and this is not "chamber of commerce" style propaganda, Mexico City is a better place to live than ever.  It reminds me of Dickens' words in "Tale of Two Cities": "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times."  Mexico City has improved due to better air quality (with the introduction of unleaded gasoline at Pemex stations), with the increase in real estate values causing factories to move out of the immediate city to places beyond the valley on the other side of the mountains, meaning there is less air pollution, and by the introduction of one day per week without a car programs, here known as "Hoy no circula".

The crime rate is perhaps a little better (lower) than it was before, but it is definitely not worse.  Many foreigners have come to live here and certain neighborhoods such as la Condesa, la Roma Norte, Santa María la Ribera and others have become fashionable places for young creative types, sort of like on the North Side of Chicago or the Upper West Side of Manhattan, etc.  I find this city to be an endlessly fascinating place and if one uses one's wits, one will not get in trouble.  Don't get in an unlicensed "gypsy cab" but use a "taxi de sitio", don´t wander through unsafe neighborhoods at night.  Don't dress ostentatiously with Rolex watches, etc. and other fancy adornments.  Don't drive a Mercedes Benz or Hummer through the streets of the city, as that calls attention.  But if you live modestly, you will most likely be all right.

Meanwhile, this city offers the greatest of offerings of restaurants (food from all over the world, not just tacos and enchiladas), movies (foreign films from all over the world at the Cineteca Nacional), concerts, music, orchestras, symphonies, bookstores, magnificent parks (the Parque México in la colonia Hipódromo Condesa neighborhood is stunningly beautiful), museums (el Museo Nacional de Antropología, el museo histórico del Castillo de Chapultepec, el Museo de Bellas Artes, el Palacio Nacional, etc., etc., etc. there are too many to mention in full.)   This city is also a major financial center for Latin America, and if you wish to learn about finance in emerging markets, it is a great place for that.  The social life is grand, there are many friendly people here, and many of them sit out at restaurants on the sidewalks until the late hours of the evening socializing.  All of this which I greatly enjoy makes it difficult for me to ever think about leaving, so most likely I will be here until I retire in the distant future, primero Dios, as they say in this country.
